Beyond the Journey: reflections.
A month ago, I was taking off for Hong Kong. I was reuniting with Camilla, filled with the emotion of living alongside her a chapter of her Asian adventure. She had experienced Asia as a child; now she was living it as an adult, surely with different eyes, with the filters that come from a life layered with experience, deeply aware of the extraordinary gift she was giving herself, both professionally and personally.
Living outside your comfort zone is an incredible exercise, and she rose to it beautifully. You can tell she grew up in change, that she has turned adaptation into a mantra.
I landed in Hong Kong with the enthusiasm that has always marked each of my arrivals, and day after day I absorbed its outlines, step by step.
I savored everything, literally (what unbelievable restaurants!) and figuratively. I didn’t stop for a second. And every morning upon waking I would tell myself, “Today I’m taking it slow,” only to give in to the desire to discover just a little more. Kilometer after kilometer, I reassured myself that I would have time to rest once I was back home.
I walked an infinite number of steps. There was always something waiting just around the corner. I wandered in and out of the most varied places, took an incredible number of photos. I plunged into traffic, into chaos, into silence. Immersed in nature and wrapped in the city’s frenetic rhythm. I browsed through unlikely markets, trying each time to dive in as deeply as possible.
I savored every short trip beyond the city, and the articles I wrote are proof of that. But above all, I walked a beautiful stretch of road with my daughter. I had the privilege of being with her for a long and precious time, and only those with grown children who have already left the nest know how tyrannical time can be, how often you end up seeing each other in parentheses that are far too brief.
This time, I gave myself the gift of time with her. Slow, special time. Shared conversations, long walks, dinners just the two of us.
I lived outside my routine, syncing myself to hers. I waited for her every day outside her office, and listening to her enthusiastic stories, sharing her day, was always one of the most beautiful moments of mine.
We still have a few days together before I place the final period on this incredible holiday. Ahead of us, another small journey, a few new discoveries, more indelible memories to carry home as something incredibly precious.
There are things even more important and beautiful than the journey itself: sharing it with the people you love.
That is the true meaning of my trip, this sharing, this reclaiming of time with my daughters, diving into their lives. As a daughter, I always loved the times when my parents—and later my mother, would land in my life for a while. As a mother, I now feel that same immense joy.
