Ho salutato luoghi e persone e dall’altra parte dell’oceano ho abbracciato altri affetti e respirato altre strade.
C’è stata emozione in partenza e all’arrivo.
Ciao settembre !
Already October.
30 days of September and I have the feeling I multiplied them by a thousand.
I lived so many lives in this month when summer gently slips into autumn.
Lives and emotions.
I said goodbye to places and people and, on the other side of the ocean, I embraced other loved ones and breathed in different streets.
There was emotion both when leaving and when arriving. Tears of exhaustion, but also of joy.
I emptied a 300-square-metre house, and every time I wonder how it is possible to pack up your entire world and fit it into a container that will slowly make its way across the ocean towards Europe, taking the opposite route from the one three years ago.
I spent a few days with my girls, days I had longed for and imagined during those weeks when the tiredness was really starting to catch up with me. They were supposed to be a little different and a little lighter, but bad luck had other plans and they turned into something else. A good half-day in the emergency room with my mum after one of those falls you always hope won’t cause too much damage. Thankfully, it didn’t, except to her ego, which, unfortunately, at 90 is as fragile as she is.
Still, having my girls around made everything feel lighter and, despite the chaos, I managed to catch my breath a little. And one of the reasons for our reunion was achieved: Chiara’s wedding dress has been chosen, and it is beautiful!
And in the middle of all this, I carved out some time for a rather unproductive search for a home in Milan, which in itself deserves a post of its own. I viewed apartments, scrolled through listings, talked to real estate agents. A confusing jumble that, for now, is struggling to turn into anything conclusive. Anyway, I keep telling myself, there’s no rush. The container hasn’t even left yet, and if, for a while, where we will settle remains a little vague, that’s okay too!
30 days when every morning I woke up with an agenda full of things to do. 30 days when, every night before going to sleep, I checked my to-do list to make sure I wasn’t falling behind on my timeline.
That’s how September comes to an end. I left behind the first autumn leaves, colouring the slopes of Mont Royal in a thousand shades, and I found myself back in the Salento summer, which seems to go on forever but is finally free from the chaos of August.
I’m giving myself one more little escape into the sun and sea before facing a winter that will be milder than the harsh, cold northern ones of the past few years, but perhaps more complicated too.
Goodbye, September!
