Viaggi…

Journeys

It’s a somewhat strange journey, this one, a journey that feels like a holiday. I’m going to Italy for Christmas; we will all gather together in our masseria for one of those precious moments when hearts intertwine. A journey that tastes of a slow detachment. It’s the first step toward our inevitable departure from Canada, which in 2026 will take us elsewhere. It’s a bittersweet journey. I already know that the next return here to Montreal will mark the definitive full stop.

I’m leaving for an unusually long period of time, and there are many reasons. I have a beautiful trip planned that will take me to Asia at the beginning of 2026, but we also have to start shifting the centre of our lives outside Canadian borders. It seems wise not to exceed the number of days that would bind us there again for tax purposes, for yet another long year.

But it isn’t easy, because it feels a bit like rehearsing for what, in the best-case scenario, will be a departure without return in the spring.

I closed the front door as I do every time I close it for a more or less long stretch. I did it with a small weight in my chest, the kind that shows up when the countdown begins again.

If I’m lucky, I’ll return when winter is down to its final blows, and I’ll once again enjoy that slow awakening of nature that has such a special flavour after long, icy months.

These last weeks have been freezing, snowy, but beautiful, because I savoured everything and everyone with slowness and sweetness. I felt the need to build memories—to keep them precious for the months when my daily life will no longer be the one so beautifully paced by routine.

Perhaps what I’ll miss most in these upcoming wandering months will be precisely that gentle rhythm of life I’ve built in this corner of the world—one I would add I’ve managed to build once again.

Every time I pack up my world to unpack it somewhere else, I always ask myself whether I’ll manage. Whether I’ll rebuild strong bonds again, whether I’ll grow attached once more to places and things. And every time I realise that yes, the energy I pour in is more than repaid by what I receive in return. Maybe that’s also why beginning to push a door half-closed already hurts a little…
