Perché espatriare ti cambia?

English translation follows

Ti rimetti in gioco, accetti sfide, affronti battaglie.

Cercare risposte a domande spesso complesse, ci porta necessariamente a doveri capire chi siamo, cosa facciamo e ogni tanto anche cosa vogliamo.

Ho tolto i filtri che all’inizio mi portavo dietro.

Why Does Moving Abroad Change You?

Because every time you arrive in a new place, you’re starting a little from scratch. And starting from scratch also means facing your own transformation.

Life abroad changes us, reshaping us into a new form, perhaps the best version of ourselves. That might sound bold, but it’s not.

You put yourself back in the game, accept challenges, face battles. Whether it’s your first or your tenth time landing somewhere new, you always have to find balance, both outside and within yourself. This doesn’t just make you stronger; it makes you very different from the first time you faced this delicate exercise of change.

Searching for answers to often complex questions inevitably forces us to understand who we are, what we do, and sometimes, what we truly want. And all of this happens through a continuous self-reflection, the only way to stay on course through the turbulent waters of change.

The more time passes, the more exciting it becomes to walk unfamiliar streets. We enjoy seeing faces we’ve never seen before. Languages we don’t know sound like music to our ears. All things that, at the beginning, when we took those first steps into the new, into life beyond our borders, seemed scary and unsettling.

But the more time passes, the more the confusing and mysterious becomes food for our soul. In the confusion and mystery, we find the strength to keep going, to rebuild, to get excited.

Does it scare you? Surely, those who have never lived abroad might think that this constant search for “excitement” in everyday life is a sign of instability or a form of inadequacy.

But it’s not. It’s simply the result of change in us, the power of living perpetually outside our comfort zone, which almost becomes an addiction.
Leaving behind your certainties is hard, the first time especially, incredibly hard. But then it becomes an exercise you almost miss, something you periodically feed on, and feel is necessary to keep moving forward.

When I think back to the first time I said goodbye to everyone and boarded that flight to Paris, I smile. I smile because that was tough, I had no idea what it would mean to live outside my comfort zone. I was sure it would be a brief chapter, and we’d go back soon. I almost hoped for it…

I was definitely a different Giulietta back then.

Years have passed. Countries and cities have left their marks. Each time, I found myself becoming a slightly new person, with a richer and richer collection of experiences — but also my way of seeing things changed. I shed the filters I carried at the beginning. That was the biggest change.
I learned to look at each new place as if nothing had ever been there before, without comparisons, with fresh eyes.

My simply curious gaze and the desire to embrace a new culture made all the difference, making me a little different with every step.

This is how life abroad changes us. All for the better, at least from my point of view.

How about you? Has it been the same for you?
