Identity as a Masterpiece
“When you live abroad, that identity isn’t lost. Instead, it transforms into something new: a work of art that evolves day by day, bringing together fragments of the past within unfamiliar frames.”
I came across this thought, and I couldn’t agree more. At this very moment in my life, as my identity is being shaken up yet again, these words resonate deeply with me.
Life abroad gives us precisely this: evolution.
Our identity takes shape, breaks apart, and takes shape again, keeping pace with our movements. Within it, a thousand elements of our past merge with details of our new future, in a constant state of becoming.
A work of art created by the accumulation of so many before and afters, overlapping without ever resembling one another. And it is precisely this overlapping, this lack of resemblance, that creates something unique and unrepeatable, just as a work of art should be.
It may sound presumptuous, but it isn’t. The constant state of becoming we find ourselves in makes us rather special, for better or worse. And no longer belonging to a single culture, but rather to the sum of many, is an integral part of this uniqueness.
So, what is the greatest gift this way of being gives us? An extraordinary openness to everything that is different. Tolerance towards different beliefs and ways of thinking. The drive to look beyond our own filters. And the richness of the exchanges that come from interacting with people from vastly different backgrounds.
It couldn’t really be any other way, given the very nature of how we are shaped: no longer part of a single whole, but of many.
Many worlds where cultures, languages, and religions intertwine into something that, hopefully, one day, will become the norm.
I keep hoping…
