Scorretta e fallosa dalla prima all’ultima partita.

The World Cup is over!

Magical nights, chasing a goal…

Spain lifted the World Cup last night after a one-sided match against an Argentina that was exactly the same as always. Unsporting and foul from the first match to the last.

The World Cup is coming back to Europe.

For us Italians, another World Cup — yet another one — without Italy. It could have been the perfect tournament for me to simply not care, especially since I only watch football on very rare occasions: the Euros and the World Cup.

And yet, it turned out to be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy football without necessarily being emotionally involved in it.

But can you really not get emotionally involved? I don’t think so.

In the end, for me, it was yet another demonstration of the rather strong sense of belonging that the different countries I have lived in have left me with. Italy wasn’t there, sadly. But many of the others I have called home were.

So there I was, cheering sometimes for Sweden, sometimes for Canada; watching France with absolute confidence that they would take the trophy home; being impressed by Japan, who may not have been playing football for generations, but still showed up and made their mark.

You might call it a wandering heart, but so be it.

In the absence of my country of origin, here I am, finding ways to express my affection anyway — fully aware of everyone’s limitations, but always ready to celebrate the achievements of the places that hold a special place in my heart.

Expat life, instead of uprooting us, gives us more roots. It multiplies them with every place we have lived in and gives us an immense gift: the feeling of belonging not to just one place, but to many.

When people talk about multiculturalism, this is exactly what it means!!
