Adesso tocca a lei.
Weddings, Then and Now
Twenty-nine years ago, I was about to get married. At 27, I didn’t have many certainties, which is only natural at that age. I had no idea what the future had in store for me. And I could never have imagined that Paris would become the first stop on a journey that would take us around the world, or that our tiny apartment tucked beneath the rooftops would be the first of many places we would call home.
I didn’t know either, although maybe, deep down, I already sensed it, that the baby growing inside me would, within just a few years, become a big sister twice over.
We were a family in the making. Two twenty-seven-year-olds standing in front of a book filled with blank pages. A book entirely waiting to be written. And we worked hard to fill every corner of every page, with plans and adventures, as two, then three, then four, then five.
That book today is a beautiful mix of a thousand things: countries that welcomed and embraced us, lives lived far beyond our comfort zones, unforgettable experiences.
But today, after this long introduction, I don’t actually want to talk about us. I don’t want to write about these 29 years, which, added to the 9 that came before them, are beginning to sound like a lot… though never too many.
Today, 29 years later, I find myself planning another wedding: my daughter’s. The very daughter who, warm and safe inside my belly, was already there at mine. And now it’s her turn.
There is so much emotion, of course, but above all an endless sense of joy and pride. We gave her and her sisters the desire to build a life together and to strengthen that bond in every possible way, even on paper. We showed them that despite all of life’s ups and downs, facing them with the right person by your side is priceless. A team is always stronger together.
There will be difficult moments. There will be arguments, tears, and disagreements. There should be, because that too is part of building a life together. You’ll navigate by sight, sometimes adjusting your course, sometimes letting the boat drift without correcting it too much. You’ll improvise three-quarters of the time, because learning how to hold onto each other and grow stronger happens through all the obstacles life puts in your path. Over the years, you’ll share immense joys and perhaps, because this is life, deep pain as well. In both cases, you will have each other: a source of strength, support, and safety.
And we, from our side, will always watch over you from one step behind, as good parents of grown children should. But we’ll always be ready to take one step forward again whenever you need us beside you.
When your sisters were born, Federica, like so many mothers, I wondered whether I could possibly love them with the same intensity. And I did, because the heart expands to make room for love. Mine has already made room for Sean as if he were my own son, and I am incredibly proud of both of you and of the life you will build together.
