10 ottobre, 28 anni da mamma.

28 anni fa è nata mia figlia maggiore.

28 anni siamo diventati genitori.

Buon compleanno amore mio!

October 10th, 28 Years of Being a Mom

28 years ago, my eldest daughter was born.
28 years ago, we became parents.
The sun was shining in Paris, but it was already getting chilly.
I was 27 years and 357 days old, practically the same age she is now.
28 years ago, I became a mother for the very first time. And if the emotion of witnessing a child’s birth is always overwhelming, whether it’s the first or the last, the true, life-altering earthquake only ever happens that first time.

In that moment, as she was laid on me for the first time, I looked into her eyes and called myself “mamma.” In that moment, looking into Paolo’s eyes, he was no longer just my partner, the young man by my side, my husband, he had become Federica’s father.
We were parents, and we would be forever. We were stepping into a brand new phase of our lives, and she would be the one to guide us, every step of the way.

As my own father used to say, being a parent is the only job in the world with no books, no classes, no practice exercises. You become a parent in the field, by falling, failing, fixing your mistakes.
With your first child, you suddenly find yourself staring at a blank page, waiting to be written. As if nothing before really mattered, or only barely did. You have to learn and build everything from scratch. And in that learning and building, it’s your first child who walks alongside you, who guides you.
We, unprepared, inexperienced, clumsy in our first steps.

The children who come after have the advantage of someone ahead of them, a trailblazer of sorts, the one with whom we learned the ropes, sharpened our skills, smoothed out the edges.

Parenting is a wild journey, I truly believe there’s no more exhilarating and challenging experience. And I don’t think there’s anything else quite like it. Every action, every decision, every word is driven by that unconditional love that only children can awaken in us.

For 28 years, I have loved unconditionally, unwaveringly.

For 28 years, I’ve woken up and gone to bed knowing that what I do, the decisions I make, the smiles and the tears, every tiny detail of my life, is no longer just about me, or about the adult couple we are. It all touches, involves, and affects my daughters too.

Once you bring a child into the world, you are never alone again.
From that moment on, your thoughts and actions are forever in the plural.
They are always there, at the heart of so many of our thoughts, behind so many of our choices. A child changes your life forever, and for me, it has only made it better.

Every single day for the past 28 years, I realize just how magical it is, this thing of bringing a child into the world and watching them grow. It’s something incredible, deeply enriching.

These 28 years, hand in hand with my beautiful girl, and with her sisters, have been the greatest adventure I’ve ever given myself.
The most complex task I’ve ever undertaken.
The biggest challenge I’ve ever faced.
And without a doubt, the most extraordinary experience of my life.

Time really does fly…
Happy birthday, my love!
