Ne ripartiremo abbastanza rapidamente perché sicuramente nuovi progetti ci porteranno altrove.

D’altronde, The person who risks nothing, does nothing,
has nothing, is nothing.
(To Risk, Rudyard Kipling, 1910)

Closing a Chapter

Over the past few weeks, Northvolt Six was the last remaining piece to “sort out” in a great adventure that has lasted nine long years. It could have, and should have, been the final puzzle piece to end well and offer a chance to pick up the thread once more. For sure It was the solid, final piece, barely touched by the crisis and never impacted by the failure of the parent company. It had everything going for it. But there were many “buts.”

From 2016 until now, from California to Sweden, the Northvolt project has felt, in many ways, like a family story. That’s how it is when you build something from scratch. For us, it wasn’t just Paolo and his partners’ journey, it was ours, too. We experienced everything, shared every joy and every pain.

From the uncertain first steps to the glory, expansion after expansion. It feels like just yesterday that we raised a toast, on a beach in the Maldives, to the production of the very first cell. And going even further back, it feels like yesterday when the name “Northvolt” was chosen for this beautiful, bold adventure.

I didn’t do much—or maybe I did—because, as in many other occasions, I believe that my role of quiet support was nonetheless essential.

For years, these past nine, I lived to the rhythm of major milestones achieved, and the stress that inevitably came with each one. I lived through crises, doubts, fears… all the emotions that come with trying to change the world and make it even just a little bit better for future generations.

For us, the end had been written for months, since Paolo stepped back from a more operational role, trying to salvage what he could for the team he built here in Montreal. We knew our paths, ours and Northvolt’s—would soon part ways. But we hoped the hard work it took to establish roots here would be rewarded.

Unfortunately, the ending turned out differently, and Paolo explains it well.

There are no regrets, but there is a bit of sadness. This will be an ending to process, and like all new paragraphs, it may take some time.

We arrived in Canada full of enthusiasm. We’ll be leaving fairly quickly, because surely new projects will take us elsewhere. But we’ll hold onto the memory of yet another human and professional adventure which, despite the way it ended, we wouldn’t rewrite any differently.

There’s a lingering bitterness that Northvolt North America wasn’t given the opportunity to join the rest of the company, which, thanks to the recent acquisition, does have a future ahead. But looking back serves no purpose. It’s time to move forward.

I remain deeply proud and grateful for these years, especially the last few, which tied our lives to this incredible city. I still believe that everything happens with a certain logic, that every mistake teaches us something, and that after every fall, we rise stronger than before. Every step, every decision, is a lesson for what comes next, and we’ve learned a lot , without a doubt.

After all:

“The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.”
