Ciao papà,

23 anni.
Ti ho lasciato partire come tanti anni prima avevi fatto tu con me.
23 Years of Absence
Dear papà,
23 years. It’s been 23 years. It feels like yesterday, but it isn’t. When I think back to that time, there are feelings that have remained almost unchanged, clinging to my skin. A small emptiness inside that nothing has ever filled. But I moved on. I built lives and gathered experiences. I visited countries and left my suitcases in a thousand places that I called home. I moved forward, first day by day, then month by month. The excruciating pain slowly gave way to memories, which, with their beauty, simply soothe. I turned your painful absence into a driving force to keep smiling.
You would be proud of me, I’m sure of it. You would be proud of us, of the road we have travelled. Today, as I am about to close yet another door for good, I think of the first push you gave me when, hesitantly, I was preparing to take flight towards a life beyond the safe boundaries I knew.
Go, you told me. Go with an open mind and curious eyes. I did. Once, twice, so many times. And every time, your first words of encouragement came with me.
You, curious, open-minded, always ready to discover something new, taught me the right attitude to set off and explore the world.
And I did. And every time, I thought about how happy you would have been to come and visit us, to walk a little of the road with us, to watch us build plans and move forward with enthusiasm.
Dad, 23 years ago I held your hand for the last time and told you, “Go, don’t worry, we’ll be okay.” I let you go, just as many years before you had done with me. Loving also means being able to bear the pain of separation.
We made it. We turned pain into strength. Tears became smiles. Absence transforms into presence, in gestures and memories. Of course, I would still have needed your shoulder to lean on, your hugs, your eyes resting on me. I wasn’t ready. But perhaps no one ever truly is. It’s not a matter of age!
I kept walking my path. I became even more of an adult, even stronger and more determined. I never stopped feeling you beside me, and for me, you are there in every decision I make, in every doubt turned into certainty, in the beautiful moments and in the more difficult ones. 23 years of absence, but your presence is here, and it always will be.
And every now and then, in a whisper, I call out to you, just to hear myself say the word papà once again.
