Da qualche mese stiamo ristrutturando il nostro piccolo paradiso nelle campagne salentine. La ciliegina sulla torta di un progetto maturato negli anni, dettato dalla voglia di creare un nido stabile nel nostro mondo in continuo movimento.

L’idea era “regalare” alle nostre figlie e a noi stessi, un porto sicuro dove ritrovarci. Una calamita che ci portasse tutti insieme in un unico piacevole punto del globo.

Il Salento è venuto fuori per caso. Dal primo momento in cui abbiamo posato i piedi sulla sua terra, abbiamo capito che quello era il posto, il punto d’approdo.

Come sempre quando ci si imbarca in una ristrutturazione il percorso non è mai semplice. Ed è ancora più complicato quando di mezzo ci sono migliaia di chilometri e diverse ore di fuso.

Comunque con qualche andata e ritorno per monitorare l’andamento, tanto per far vedere che mon mollavano la presa su tempi e modi, ce la siamo cavata. Adesso, incrociando le dita, siamo agli sgoccioli.

Quello che non sapevamo e che abbiamo piacevolmente scoperto , è tutto un indotto di piccoli artigiani che con la loro passione e competenza ci hanno conquistati.

Nel scegliere la biancheria per la casa abbiamo visitato delle filature dove il savoir faire si è tramandato intatto dai genitori ai figli. Le nuove generazioni hanno portato quel tanto di innovazione che serve per affrontare il ventunesimo secolo mantenendo però intatta quell’eredità di dettagli, che appartengono alla loro storia.

Vedere i tessuti prendere vita è pura magia. Vedere i vecchi disegni delicatamente concepiti su carta millimetrata ingiallita dal tempo, sempre riproposti oggi, in quel miscuglio di vecchie tradizioni e nuove tecnologie, apre il cuore.

Per alcuni elementi di arredo abbiamo varcato i cancelli di una falegnameria. Mastro Geppetto dei tempi moderni, con nell’aria un profumo di legno, intorno a noi tavole e elementi che prendono vita.

Anche qui conoscenze ancestrali si mescolano con competenze nuove: il risultato è esplosivo.

Poi ovviamente ci sono quelle competenze che si mescolano nel cantiere che da inizio anno ha invaso ogni angolo della casa. Un mescolarsi di saperi antichi e tocchi di contemporaneità, che sanno riportare in luce volte e conci senza snaturarne la storia e accompagnandoli per mano verso i tempi moderni e, perché no, il futuro.

Questo è poi il bello delle vecchie masserie. La nostra ha radici che affondano nel Sedicesimo secolo, ma se la guardi mantiene un’allure intemporale che mescola ieri e oggi.

E se abbiamo curato ogni dettaglio dell’interno, anche per i 4 acri che la circondano vogliamo dettagli che le facciano onore. Il parco, l’ agrumeto, gli ulivi a perdita d’occhio, sono già sublimi, ma ci siamo fatti un giro con un vivaista per capire come mantenere e migliorare il nostro paradiso floreale.

Bello vedere la passione con cui toccava la terra, coglieva i capperi selvatici, scrutava tronchi e radici. Anche qui c’è molto rispetto per il territorio, per la sua natura e il suo aspetto, oltre che delle competenze preziose.

Il Salento ancora una volta ci ha sorpresi e sempre in positivo!

Adesso non ci resta che mettere il punto finale ai lavori e goderci il seguito della storia che, ne sono sicura, sarà un susseguirsi di momenti indelebili.

Timeless Local Savoir Faire in Salento

For the past few months, we’ve been renovating our little slice of paradise in the Salento countryside. The cherry on top of a project that took shape over the years, born from a desire to create a stable nest in our ever-moving world.

The idea was to “gift” our daughters and ourselves a safe haven, a magnetic place that would always bring us together in one delightful corner of the globe.

Salento came into the picture almost by chance. But from the very first moment we set foot on its land, we knew: this was the place, our point of return.

As always when you take on a renovation, the journey is never simple. And it’s even more complicated when thousands of kilometers and several time zones are involved.

Still, with a few back-and-forth trips to monitor progress, just to show we weren’t letting go of our grip on timing and execution, we made it through. And now, fingers crossed, we’re in the home stretch.

What we didn’t know, and what pleasantly surprised us, was the whole network of local artisans whose passion and expertise truly won us over.

When choosing linens for the house, we visited weaving workshops where savoir-faire has been passed down from parents to children. The younger generations have brought just enough innovation to face the 21st century, while preserving the legacy of detail and craftsmanship that defines their history.

Watching fabrics come to life is pure magic. Seeing old, delicately hand-drawn patterns on yellowed graph paper, now revived through a mix of traditional methods and modern tools, warms the heart.

For some of our furniture, we stepped into a woodworking shop, like a modern-day Geppetto’s workshop. The scent of wood in the air, boards and pieces springing to life all around us.

Here too, ancestral knowledge meets contemporary skill, and the result is nothing short of explosive.

Then there are the skills found in the construction site that, since the start of the year, has taken over every corner of the house. A blend of ancient techniques and modern touches that bring arches and stonework back to light, respecting their history while guiding them gently into the present, and perhaps even the future.

That’s the beauty of old masserie like ours. It dates back to the 16th century, yet it holds an ageless charm that gracefully blends past and present.

And just as we’ve cared for every detail inside, we want the same attention paid to the four acres surrounding the house. The park, citrus grove, and olive trees stretching as far as the eye can see are already sublime, but we took a walk with a local nurseryman to learn how to preserve and enhance this floral paradise.

It was a joy to see the passion in how he touched the soil, picked wild capers, and examined trunks and roots. Once again, there was deep respect for the land, its nature, its character, and the valuable knowledge rooted in it.

Salento continues to surprise us, always in the best way.

Now all that’s left is to put the final touches on the work… and enjoy the next chapter of the story, which I’m sure will be filled with unforgettable moments.
